Good News for Texas - But Will the Dimmocrats Pay Attention?

Wendy Davis, Texas's glamorous, pink-sneakered, Olympic Filibusterer has announced that she will run for Governor of Texas, following in the admirable footsteps of Ann Richards....

Ann Richards ran well, but did the Harley?

The Daily Kos this morning brought us the

"... huge news from Texas—Wendy Davis just announced her campaign for governor.

Can you chip in $3 to help elect a pro-choice Democrat the next governor of Texas?

Over 76,000 Daily Kos community members signed the petition to draft Wendy Davis for governor. This afternoon, she finally announced that yes, she is taking the plunge.

Let's be clear from the very start: This won't be an easy battle. This is Texas, after all. The state has the lowest voter participation in the country, and you know who those non-voters are: young voters, Latinos, Asians, African Americans, single women—the very people that Democrats depend on to win. As I'm fond of saying, if our voters turn out, we win.

Wendy Davis could be the person to activate our core voters, accelerating the demographic trends that will eventually make Texas purple, and then blue, whether Republicans like it or not.

But that won’t happen without the grassroots.

Turn Texas Blue: Chip in $3 now.

Keep fighting,
Markos Moulitsas
Founder and Publisher, Daily Kos"

Now the Daily Kos is a good source, and I often enjoy what they have to say, but I'm not advocating giving your hard-earned cash to the Dimmocrats - that's for you to decide, bearing in mind that John Stone-Face Kerry is at this very moment visiting Asia to sell a Corporate "Trade Deal" that has been described as "NAFTA on steroids", and Obama today achieves the landmark moment of having presided over the deportation of more illegal immigrants than his unspeakable predecessor G.W. Bush.

(Figure given on "Democracy Now".)

The "Washington Post" immediately commented that Wendy Davis will not win.  Why the hell they say that I don't know, bearing in mind that, first, Davis is charismatic, good-looking and a heroine to women for her stand (literally) on Reproductive Freedom in the benighted State. Second, Texas had a very popular and successful woman Governor in Ann Richards, who was defeated in 1994 by W., (probably after a "recount", I don't know.)

Ann Richards QUOTE:  "I get a lot of cracks about my hair, mostly from men who don't have any."

But the main reason I think Davis might have a good chance is that elections in this democracy are decided by who turns out.  With her face-recognition, feminist street-cred, and probable appeal to the young and ethnic minorities, she might do very well indeed.

And that's the lesson for the Dimms.  The reason that they got their asses handed to them in 2010, and possibly the reason we have this Tea Party nightmare in the House right now, is that President Backbone has failed, over and over and over, to live up to the promises he made in his campaigns, to bring us "Hope and Change".

What the students, the women, the progressives, and the ethnic minorities meant by Change, and what they thought Obama meant, was breaking the chains that tie our Government to Big Business, serving the People not the Bankers, the 99% not the 1%, taking care of "Us" not "Them".

If the Dimms would just find the guts to make that their guiding principle, they could be in power for a century.  Maybe standing up for Obamacare, and taking a first timid step towards a basic service that Britain (to name but one) has had since 1949, will prove to be a turning-point.

But I don't suggest you hold your breath....

Looking for Campbell-ot

In the process of writing a post about my talented friend Austi Campbell, I came upon the attractive visage of Texas Freshman State Senator Donna Campbell -

This charming lady apparently "hasn’t wasted any time making her mark on the 83rd Legislative Session in Austin", according to her local Radio Station.

How has she worked her wonders for the people of the Idiot State of Texas? One of her great contributions to the march of progress is:

“Most notably, Campbell authored a bill that limits the amount of classroom hours a person would need to complete in order to obtain a concealed handgun license.  Currently state law requires at least 10-hours and up to 15-hours of classroom training before a handgun license is issued.  But Campbell’s bill, which isn’t getting a lot of opposition in Austin, would reduce the requirements to a minimum of 4 hours....”

Just in case you thought having untrained idiots running around schools with firearms might indicate a lack of concern for human well-being, this fine woman has other measures in hand:
“Campbell has been an outspoken proponent of a bill that she co-authored that requires abortion clinics in Texas to meet stricter clinical standards.  Specifically, the bill would impose the same standards on abortion clinics as those imposed on ambulatory surgical centers.  Campbell says women shouldn’t be exposed to a clinic with less standards than a clinic that performs a man’s colonoscopy.  Critics say the bill amounts to a backdoor ban on abortions since the new regulations would be so costly that an estimated 80% of clinics would be forced to close.”

The sooner these Frack-happy morons secede from the Union, the better.

Yes, Mom, we are all crazy

Woke up early this morning, and looked at the Channel 5 News.

People in FIVE different US States are being warned to prepare for possibly devastating, extreme tornado weather. Global warming is definitely a liberal hoax.

The Powerhouse Fire is burning outside Los Angeles, sending a menacing glow high into the night sky. Firefighters are waiting to see what happens when the early-morning winds pick up, possibly picking up glowing embers and scattering them, who knows where? Global warming is definitely a liberal hoax.

And get this – a large proportion of LA's electricity supply comes through wires from the Central California Valley, passing straight through where the fire may burn. The DWP has been able to divert some of that power through different routes, but there is a chance that parts of the city may be left without power. We are making very slow progress towards the use of renewable energy, hampered at every turn by bureaucrats, legislators and Big Power Companies. Global warming is definitely a liberal hoax.

Fracking for oil and petroleum gas, and incidentally poisoning our air and water supply, is going on apace. Soon those people in LA won't need electric power: they'll be able to see by putting a match to the kitchen faucet. Global warming is definitely a liberal hoax.

On Link TV last night, there was a documentary about the Oil Boom, this time in Texas. The bright-eyed, articulate man who is in charge of enforcing regulations and deciding on who gets permits to drill and frack in the Lone Star Loony-Bin, spoke very well, even enthusiastically. The high price of fuel now means that it's profitable to open up all kinds of new (and old) wells. He said pretty soon, with the great new technologies we've developed (aka Fracking), we'll be producing enough oil and gas here at home, that we won't need to police the shipping lanes to protect our oil tankers, and we won't need to buy oil from (quote), “countries that wish us harm”.

No doubt there will be an enormous Peace Dividend for us all (see Ronald Reagan, greatest President ever known).

By the way - global warming is definitely a liberal hoax. Wonder who it was that informed us of the fact?
